Example

Use units where the gravitational constant and the speed of light equal 11. Fix a>0a > 0. On ℝ4\R^4 with coordinates (t,x,y,z)(t, x, y, z), the Gödel metric is g=a2(−(dt+exdz)2+dx2+dy2+12e2xdz2).g = a^2\left(-\left(dt + e^x dz\right)^2 + dx^2 + dy^2 + \frac{1}{2} e^{2x} dz^2\right). Check of the signature: the (t,z)(t, z) block of gg has determinant −12a4e2x<0-\frac12 a^4 e^{2x} < 0, so it has one negative and one positive direction. With dx2dx^2 and dy2dy^2 positive, gg has signature (−,+,+,+)(-, +, +, +).

Let u=a (dt+exdz)u = a\,(dt + e^x dz), a unit timelike covector. A computation of the Ricci curvature gives Rab=1a2uaub,R=−1a2.R_{ab} = \frac{1}{a^2} u_a u_b, \qquad R = -\frac{1}{a^2}. Hence Gab+Λgab=8πρ uaubG_{ab} + \Lambda g_{ab} = 8\pi\rho\, u_a u_b with Λ=−12a2,8πρ=1a2.\Lambda = -\frac{1}{2a^2}, \qquad 8\pi\rho = \frac{1}{a^2}. So gg solves the Einstein field equations with pressureless dust of constant density ρ\rho, moving along uu, and a negative cosmological constant.

The metric is homogeneous: the isometry group acts transitively on spacetime. The dust rotates: the vorticity of uu is nonzero. Through every point there pass closed timelike curves.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
