Grad–Shafranov equation
Summary
The Grad–Shafranov equation is the equation of equilibrium of an axisymmetric plasma in ideal MHD. It reduces the force balance between pressure and magnetic force to one scalar nonlinear elliptic equation for the poloidal flux function. The pressure and the toroidal field enter as two free functions of the flux. It is the basic tool for designing and reconstructing equilibria in tokamaks, and it is named after Harold Grad and Vitalii Shafranov.
