Definition

Use cylindrical coordinates (R,φ,Z)(R, \varphi, Z) on ℝ3\R^3, and let μ0\mu_0 be the magnetic permeability. Consider a static equilibrium of ideal MHD, given by a pressure pp and a magnetic field 𝐁\mathbf{B} with ∇p=𝐉×𝐁,μ0𝐉=∇×𝐁,∇⋅𝐁=0.\nabla p = \mathbf{J} \times \mathbf{B}, \qquad \mu_0 \mathbf{J} = \nabla \times \mathbf{B}, \qquad \nabla \cdot \mathbf{B} = 0. Assume that pp and 𝐁\mathbf{B} do not depend on φ\varphi. Write the field as 𝐁=1R∇ψ×𝐞φ+FR𝐞φ\mathbf{B} = \frac{1}{R} \nabla \psi \times \mathbf{e}_\varphi + \frac{F}{R} \mathbf{e}_\varphi with the poloidal flux function ψ(R,Z)\psi(R, Z) and F=RBφF = R B_\varphi. Then pp and FF are functions of ψ\psi alone, and the Grad–Shafranov equation is Δ∗ψ=−μ0R2dpdψ−FdFdψ,where Δ∗ψ=R∂∂R(1R∂ψ∂R)+∂2ψ∂Z2.\Delta^* \psi = -\mu_0 R^2 \frac{dp}{d\psi} - F \frac{dF}{d\psi}, \qquad \text{where } \Delta^* \psi = R \frac{\partial}{\partial R} \left( \frac{1}{R} \frac{\partial \psi}{\partial R} \right) + \frac{\partial^2 \psi}{\partial Z^2}.

Remarks

The operator Δ∗\Delta^* is a second-order elliptic operator away from the axis R=0R = 0; the equation is nonlinear when pp or FF is not affine in ψ\psi. Example, vacuum field: ψ=R2\psi = R^2 gives Δ∗ψ=R∂R(2)=0\Delta^* \psi = R \partial_R (2) = 0, and 𝐁=(1/R)(2R 𝐞R)×𝐞φ=2𝐞Z\mathbf{B} = (1/R) (2R \, \mathbf{e}_R) \times \mathbf{e}_\varphi = 2 \mathbf{e}_Z, a uniform field with pp and FF constant. Example with pressure: if dp/dψ=cdp/d\psi = c is constant and FF is constant, then ψ=−μ0cR4/8\psi = -\mu_0 c R^4 / 8 is a solution, since Δ∗R4=R∂R(4R2)=8R2\Delta^* R^4 = R \partial_R (4 R^2) = 8 R^2. Adding solutions of Δ∗ψ=0\Delta^* \psi = 0 to such particular solutions gives the Solov'ev family of equilibria. Non-example: a stellarator equilibrium depends on φ\varphi, so it is not described by this equation.
