Graph minor
Definition
Let and be finite graphs. Let be an edge of . The contraction is obtained from by removing and and adding a new vertex . The new vertex is adjacent to each other vertex that was adjacent to or to . The graph is a minor of if finitely many edge contractions turn a subgraph of into a graph isomorphic to .
Remarks
Equivalently, there are pairwise disjoint nonempty sets , one for each vertex of , with two properties. Each induces a connected subgraph of . For each edge of , some edge of joins to . The sets are called branch sets. Example: is a minor of the Petersen graph. Take as branch sets the five spokes, each made of an outer vertex and its inner neighbour. Then the outer -cycle and the inner pentagram join every two branch sets. Non-example: the triangle is not a minor of any tree, because deleting and contracting edges of a forest always gives a forest. Every subgraph is a minor, but a minor need not be a subgraph. For example, is a minor of every cycle with but a subgraph only of .
