Grashof number
Builds on Dimensionless numbers in fluid mechanicsThermal expansion coefficientViscosityBoussinesq approximation for buoyancy
Definition
Let a surface at temperature be in a fluid at temperature under gravity of acceleration . Let the fluid have thermal expansion coefficient and kinematic viscosity . Let be a characteristic length, such as the height of a vertical plate. The Grashof number is the dimensionless number
Remarks
It arises when the momentum equation with the Boussinesq approximation is made dimensionless. Some authors use so that .
Example: air with per kelvin and square metres per second, at a plate metres high and kelvin warmer. Then .
Non-example: , with thermal diffusivity , is not the Grashof number. It is the Rayleigh number, equal to .
