Boussinesq approximation for buoyancy
Summary
The Boussinesq approximation is a simplification of the equations of a fluid whose density varies a little, for example because of temperature. It neglects the density variations everywhere except in the gravity term, where they create buoyancy. The flow is then treated as incompressible. It is the standard model of natural convection, of the ocean and of much of atmospheric dynamics.
