Brunt–Väisälä frequency

Builds on Boussinesq approximation for buoyancyHarmonic oscillator

Definition

Consider a fluid at rest in a uniform gravitational field of strength g>0g > 0, with background density ρˉ(z)\bar\rho(z) at height zz. Treat it in the Boussinesq approximation with reference density ρ0\rho_0. The Brunt–Väisälä frequency NN is defined by N2=−gρ0dρˉdz.N^2 = -\frac{g}{\rho_0} \frac{d \bar\rho}{d z}. The stratification is stable where N2>0N^2 > 0, and then N=N2N = \sqrt{N^2} is a frequency in radians per unit time. For a dry atmosphere one uses instead N2=gθdθdzN^2 = \dfrac{g}{\theta} \dfrac{d \theta}{d z}, where θ(z)\theta(z) is the potential temperature.

Remarks

A parcel moved from height zz to z+ζz + \zeta without mixing keeps its density ρˉ(z)\bar\rho(z), while its new surroundings have density ρˉ(z+ζ)\bar\rho(z + \zeta). It feels the buoyancy force per unit mass −g(ρˉ(z)−ρˉ(z+ζ))/ρ0≈(g/ρ0)ρˉ′(z)ζ=−N2ζ-g \big( \bar\rho(z) - \bar\rho(z + \zeta) \big) / \rho_0 \approx (g / \rho_0) \bar\rho'(z) \zeta = -N^2 \zeta. Hence ζ¨=−N2ζ\ddot\zeta = -N^2 \zeta, the equation of a harmonic oscillator of angular frequency NN when N2>0N^2 > 0. If N2<0N^2 < 0, the displacement grows exponentially and the fluid is statically unstable.

Example: a linear profile ρˉ(z)=ρ0(1−γz)\bar\rho(z) = \rho_0 (1 - \gamma z) with γ>0\gamma > 0 gives the constant N2=gγN^2 = g \gamma; for γ=10−5\gamma = 10^{-5} m−1^{-1}, N≈10−2N \approx 10^{-2} s−1^{-1}, a period 2π/N2 \pi / N of about 1010 minutes.

Non-example: a fluid of uniform density has N=0N = 0; a displaced parcel feels no restoring force and does not oscillate.
