Definition
Let be the region occupied by the Earth's mantle, under gravity of strength pointing locally along . Let the rock have reference density , thermal expansion coefficient , thermal diffusivity and viscosity . Let be the rate of internal heating per unit mass divided by the specific heat, so that has units of temperature per time. Mantle convection is the buoyancy-driven flow of the rock in . In the Boussinesq approximation with infinite Prandtl number, its velocity , dynamic pressure and temperature satisfy:
- ;
- , a Stokes flow with buoyancy, where is a reference temperature;
- , an advection–diffusion equation with a source.
Remarks
The vigour of the flow is measured by the Rayleigh number , with the depth and the temperature contrast. Example: take kg/m³, K⁻¹, m/s² and K. With m, m²/s and Pa s, one gets . This is far above the critical value of order , so the mantle convects. Non-example: a conductive layer with below the critical value has the solution with a stable temperature profile; nothing flows. The infinite Prandtl number means inertia is dropped: the mantle's Prandtl number is of order . In real models depends strongly on temperature and pressure, and the top layer forms rigid plates.
