Richardson number
Builds on Dimensionless numbers in fluid mechanicsBrunt–Väisälä frequencyBoussinesq approximation for buoyancy
Definition
Consider a horizontal shear flow in a stratified Boussinesq fluid with Brunt–Väisälä frequency , where is the height. At a height where , the gradient Richardson number is For a flow with a velocity difference and a reduced gravity across a layer of thickness , the bulk Richardson number is .
Remarks
Both forms are dimensionless, since and are rates with dimension . The Miles–Howard theorem states that an inviscid stratified parallel shear flow with everywhere is linearly stable.
Example: with constant shear s and s gives , so the Miles–Howard criterion applies and the flow is linearly stable.
Non-example: the ratio is not the Richardson number; it is its square root, and the threshold would become .
