Definition
Let be a locally compact group with a left Haar measure and modular function . The group algebra of is the space of integrable functions, with the following operations.
- The product is convolution: .
- The involution is .
- The norm is .
Remarks
With these operations is a Banach algebra with an isometric involution, that is, a Banach -algebra: , and .
Example: with counting measure. Then , , the product is and . The sequence is a unit: . Here contains the group algebra of finitely supported sequences as a dense subalgebra.
Non-example of a unit: has no unit. If for all , then taking Fourier transforms gives wherever some is nonzero, so , which contradicts the Riemann–Lebesgue lemma . In general has a unit exactly when is discrete, but it always has a bounded approximate unit.
is commutative if and only if is abelian.
