Definition

Let GG be a group and let ℤ[G]\Z[G] be its group ring. A GG-module is a left module over ℤ[G]\Z[G]. Let ℤ\Z be the right ℤ[G]\Z[G]-module with the trivial action n⋅g=nn \cdot g = n. Let P∙→ℤP_\bullet \to \Z be a projective resolution of ℤ\Z by right ℤ[G]\Z[G]-modules. Let MM be a GG-module and let n≥0n \ge 0. The nn-th homology group of GG with coefficients in MM is Hn(G,M)=Hn(P∙⊗ℤ[G]M)=Tornℤ[G](ℤ,M),H_n(G, M) = H_n(P_\bullet \otimes_{\Z[G]} M) = \mathrm{Tor}^{\Z[G]}_n(\Z, M), the homology of the chain complex obtained by the tensor product with MM.

Remarks

The groups do not depend on the choice of projective resolution, up to canonical isomorphism. In degree 00, H0(G,M)=MGH_0(G, M) = M_G is the module of coinvariants, the quotient of MM by the subgroup generated by all gm−mgm - m. In degree 11, H1(G,ℤ)≅G/[G,G]H_1(G, \Z) \cong G / [G, G].

Example: G=ℤG = \Z written multiplicatively with generator tt, so that ℤ[G]=ℤ[t,t−1]\Z[G] = \Z[t, t^{-1}]. The sequence 0→ℤ[G]→ t−1 ℤ[G]→ℤ→00 \to \Z[G] \xrightarrow{\ t - 1\ } \Z[G] \to \Z \to 0 is a free resolution of ℤ\Z. Tensoring with the trivial module ℤ\Z gives the complex 0→ℤ→0ℤ→00 \to \Z \xrightarrow{0} \Z \to 0. So H0(ℤ,ℤ)=ℤH_0(\Z, \Z) = \Z, H1(ℤ,ℤ)=ℤH_1(\Z, \Z) = \Z, and Hn(ℤ,ℤ)=0H_n(\Z, \Z) = 0 for n≥2n \ge 2.

Non-example: the groups Tornℤ(ℤ,M)\mathrm{Tor}^{\Z}_n(\Z, M), taken over ℤ\Z instead of ℤ[G]\Z[G], forget the action. They vanish for n≥1n \ge 1, while H1(ℤ,ℤ)=ℤH_1(\Z, \Z) = \Z.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
