Group of units of a monoid

Definition

Let (M,∗,e)(M, \ast, e) be a monoid. An element u∈Mu \in M is a unit when it has a two-sided inverse, that is, an element v∈Mv \in M with u∗v=v∗u=eu \ast v = v \ast u = e. The group of units of MM is the set M×M^\times of the units of MM, with the operation ∗\ast restricted to M×M^\times. It is a group with identity ee.

Remarks

The units of the monoid (Z,⋅)(\mathbb{Z}, \cdot) are 11 and −1-1. The units of the monoid of n×nn \times n real matrices under multiplication are the invertible matrices, and they form the general linear group GLn(R)\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{R}). For a ring RR, the group of units R×R^\times is the group of units of the monoid (R,⋅)(R, \cdot).

Explanations

L1 human

In a monoid, some elements can be undone and others cannot. The elements that can be undone are the units. The units alone form a group, because products and inverses of units are units.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
