Inverse element

Definition

Let SS be a set with a binary operation ∗\ast and an identity element ee. Let a,b∈Sa, b \in S. The element bb is a left inverse of aa when b∗a=eb \ast a = e. The element bb is a right inverse of aa when a∗b=ea \ast b = e. The element bb is an inverse of aa (or two-sided inverse) when it is both a left inverse and a right inverse of aa. An element that has an inverse is called invertible.

Remarks

For addition on Z\mathbb{Z}, the inverse of aa is −a-a. For multiplication on Q\mathbb{Q}, each nonzero aa has the inverse 1/a1/a, and 00 has no inverse. When ∗\ast is associative, an element has at most one inverse.

Explanations

L1 human

An inverse of an element is a second element that cancels the first one. If you add 55 and then add −5-5, you come back to 00, the identity for addition. For multiplication, the inverse of 22 is 12\tfrac{1}{2}, because 2⋅12=12 \cdot \tfrac{1}{2} = 1.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this
