Definition
Let be a group and let be a field. Let be a vector space over , and let be the group of invertible linear maps under composition. A representation of on is a group homomorphism . That is, for all . The dimension of is the degree of . Two representations and are isomorphic if there is a linear isomorphism with for all .
Remarks
Example: let and . The map , viewed as multiplication on , is a representation of degree , because , and the value does not depend on the representative of its class. Non-example: on , the map sending to and to on is not a representation, because but . When , the group is the general linear group , and a representation is a matrix-valued homomorphism. Equivalently, a representation is a linear action of on , or a module over the group algebra .
