Group velocity
Definition
Consider a linear wave equation in with a branch of its dispersion relation. Assume that is real-valued and differentiable on an open set of wave vectors. The group velocity at the wave vector is the gradient In one dimension it is .
Remarks
A wave packet with an amplitude concentrated near moves, to first order, with velocity : expanding gives for a fixed envelope . In one dimension, , where is the phase velocity; the two agree exactly when the equation is non-dispersive.
Example: light in a cold plasma has with plasma frequency . Then and , and .
Non-example: the ratio is not the group velocity in a dispersive medium. For deep water waves, with gravitational acceleration , so , while .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
