Definition
Let be a field and let be a finitely generated associative algebra over with identity. Let be a finite-dimensional subspace that contains and generates as an algebra. For , let be the span of all products with , with . The growth function of with respect to is For functions , write if there is an integer with for all , and if and . The growth of is the class of under .
Remarks
The growth does not depend on . If is another such subspace, then for some , because is finite-dimensional and ; so , and symmetrically.
The algebra has polynomial growth if for some constants . It has exponential growth if for some and all . Otherwise it has intermediate growth.
Example: for and , the space has the basis of monomials with . So , and has polynomial growth.
Non-example of the setting: the field of rational functions is not a finitely generated -algebra, so no growth function is defined for it in this way.
For a finitely generated group with a finite symmetric generating set , take , the group algebra, and the span of . Then has the basis of group elements of word length at most , so the growth of is the growth of .
