Hadamard matrix
Builds on MatrixTransposeIdentity matrix
Definition
Let be a positive integer. A Hadamard matrix of order is an matrix with entries in such that . Here is the transpose of and is the identity matrix of size .
Remarks
The condition says that any two distinct rows have dot product , so they agree in exactly places. Since , also , so the columns are pairwise orthogonal as well. Example: satisfies . The Kronecker product of two Hadamard matrices is a Hadamard matrix, so the Kronecker powers of give Hadamard matrices of every order . Non-example: no matrix with entries is Hadamard, since the dot product of two rows is a sum of three terms , which is odd and so not . A Hadamard matrix of order can exist only if , or is a multiple of ; the Hadamard conjecture asks whether all multiples of occur. For such , .
