Hankel matrix
Definition
Let be a ring and let be an matrix over . The matrix is a Hankel matrix when for all and . Equivalently, there are elements , for , with for all .
Remarks
Example: is Hankel, with ; each anti-diagonal is constant. Non-example: is not Hankel, because . A square Hankel matrix is symmetric, since . The Hilbert matrix, with , is a Hankel matrix. If is the matrix with ones on the anti-diagonal and zeros elsewhere, then is Hankel exactly when is a Toeplitz matrix.
