Statement
Let be a connected semisimple Lie group with finite centre, with a fixed Haar measure. Let be its Plancherel measure on the unitary dual .
- The support of is the set of tempered irreducible unitary representations of .
- The measure is given explicitly as follows. Let run over representatives of the association classes of cuspidal parabolic subgroups of . Let be the real dual of the Lie algebra of . Let be a discrete series representation of and let . Let be the unitarily induced principal series representation , with distribution character . Then there are explicit nonnegative functions such that for every smooth function with compact support on ,
For the group is trivial and the inner integral is a single term. That part of the formula is over the discrete series of , where is the formal degree.
Remarks
The existence and uniqueness of come from the abstract Plancherel theorem for groups, since Harish-Chandra proved that is a type I group. Harish-Chandra's work determines completely: the discrete series of appear as atoms with mass , and each series contributes a measure in with density . The proof uses Harish-Chandra's Schwartz space, the classification of the discrete series by their characters, and the asymptotics of Eisenstein integrals governed by the Harish-Chandra c-function. The group has discrete series if and only if and a maximal compact subgroup have equal rank; otherwise the term for is absent.
Example: for there are two cuspidal parabolic classes, itself and the minimal parabolic subgroup. Up to normalizing constants, the discrete series of lowest -type have formal degree proportional to . Induce the even and odd principal series from the characters and . Then they carry densities proportional to and .
Going deeper
For a student
The theorem is the nonabelian analogue of Fourier inversion on : the value is recovered from the characters of . Its restriction to bi--invariant functions is the Plancherel theorem for spherical functions, where only the spherical principal series appear and the density is . The densities are built from Harish-Chandra's -functions, which generalize . The result is a cornerstone of the trace formula and of the Langlands program for real groups.
