Definition
Let be an algebraic number field and let be its adele ring, a locally compact abelian group under addition. For each place of , let be the completion at , and for finite let be its valuation ring. Harmonic analysis on the adeles is the Fourier analysis of built from the following data.
- The standard character. For , let on , and let on , where is the -adic fractional part of . Put , and put . Then is a nontrivial continuous unitary character of that is trivial on .
- The SchwartzโBruhat space . It is spanned by the functions of the following kind. For each infinite , lies in the Schwartz space of . For each finite , is locally constant with compact support. For all but finitely many , .
- The self-dual Haar measure on , the unique Haar measure for which the Fourier transform satisfies for all .
Remarks
The basic facts of the theory are these. The map is an isomorphism of topological groups from onto its Pontryagin dual, so is self-dual. Under this isomorphism the annihilator of the discrete subgroup is itself. For the self-dual measure, the compact quotient has volume . The adelic Poisson summation formula states that for every .
Example: on , take and for every prime . Then lies in , since every clause of item 2 holds. The Gaussian is its own Fourier transform for , and is its own Fourier transform for and the Haar measure with of volume , so . A rational number has only if for all , that is, . So Poisson summation gives the trivial identity ; with it gives the theta transformation formula.
Non-example: the product of and for every prime is not in . It fails the last clause of item 2, since for infinitely many . Indeed the set has empty interior in the finite adeles, so this function is not locally constant there.
