Harrison–Zeldovich spectrum

Builds on Matter power spectrum

Definition

Let P(k)P(k) be the matter power spectrum of the primordial density contrast, before any growth of the fluctuations. Here k>0k > 0 is the comoving wavenumber. Write P(k)=AknsP(k) = A k^{n_s} with a constant amplitude A>0A > 0 and a constant spectral index nsn_s, when this form holds. The Harrison–Zeldovich spectrum is the case ns=1n_s = 1: P(k)=Ak.P(k) = A k .

Remarks

Equivalently, the dimensionless power spectrum of the primordial curvature perturbation, Δℛ2(k)\Delta^2_{\mathcal R}(k), does not depend on kk; this is why the spectrum is called scale invariant. For the density, the dimensionless spectrum Δ2(k)=k3P(k)/(2π2)\Delta^2(k) = k^3 P(k)/(2\pi^2) grows like k4k^4, but at the time a scale enters the horizon its density contrast is the same for every kk.

Example: P(k)=2.5 kP(k) = 2.5 \, k in some units has the form AknsA k^{n_s} with A=2.5A = 2.5 and ns=1n_s = 1, so it is a Harrison–Zeldovich spectrum.

Non-example: a power law with ns=0.965n_s = 0.965 is called a red-tilted spectrum. It has slightly more power on large scales than the Harrison–Zeldovich spectrum, so it fails the condition ns=1n_s = 1.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
