definition

Having a directional derivative

Definition

Let U⊆RnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n be an open set, let f ⁣:U→Rmf \colon U \to \mathbb{R}^m, let a∈Ua \in U, let v∈Rnv \in \mathbb{R}^n, and let L∈RmL \in \mathbb{R}^m. Let g(t)=f(a+tv)g(t) = f(a + t v) for real tt near 00. The function ff has the directional derivative LL at aa in the direction vv when gg is differentiable at t=0t = 0 with g′(0)=Lg'(0) = L. Equivalently, f(a+tv)−f(a)t→L\dfrac{f(a + t v) - f(a)}{t} \to L as t→0t \to 0.

Remarks

This definition states a property of ff, aa, vv and LL. The directional derivative Dvf(a)D_v f(a) is then the vector LL, which is unique. Only the values of ff on the line through aa in the direction vv matter. So ff can have a directional derivative in each direction at aa and still fail to be continuous at aa, see this counterexample.

Explanations

L1 human

The function g(t)=f(a+tv)g(t) = f(a + t v) is the function ff seen along the straight line through aa with direction vv. To have a directional derivative means that this function of one variable has a derivative at the start of the line.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Euclidean space object
  2. Having a directional derivative definition

What depends on this

2 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
