statement proposition

Derivative gives the directional derivatives

Statement

Let U⊆RnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n be open, let f ⁣:U→Rmf \colon U \to \mathbb{R}^m, and let a∈Ua \in U. Suppose that ff is differentiable at aa with derivative Df(a)Df(a). Then for each v∈Rnv \in \mathbb{R}^n, ff has the directional derivative Df(a)(v)Df(a)(v) at aa in the direction vv: lim⁡t→0f(a+tv)−f(a)t=Df(a)(v).\lim_{t \to 0} \frac{f(a + t v) - f(a)}{t} = Df(a)(v).

Remarks

For v=eiv = e_i this gives ∂f∂xi(a)=Df(a)(ei)\dfrac{\partial f}{\partial x_i}(a) = Df(a)(e_i). So the partial derivatives of the components of ff are the entries of the matrix of Df(a)Df(a). For a real-valued ff, it gives Dvf(a)=∇f(a)⋅vD_v f(a) = \nabla f(a) \cdot v, where ∇f(a)\nabla f(a) is the gradient. In particular, Dvf(a)D_v f(a) is linear in vv. A function whose directional derivatives are not linear in vv is not differentiable.

Explanations

L1 human

Once you know the linear map Df(a)Df(a), you know the slope of ff in every direction: feed the direction into the map. For f(x,y)=x2+y2f(x, y) = x^2 + y^2 at (1,1)(1, 1), Df(1,1)(v)=2v1+2v2Df(1, 1)(v) = 2 v_1 + 2 v_2. So the slope in the direction (1,−1)(1, -1) is 00.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
