Heat transfer
Summary
Heat transfer is the flow of thermal energy between bodies, or between parts of a body, caused by differences of temperature. It takes place by three modes: conduction through matter at rest, convection by a moving fluid, and thermal radiation by electromagnetic waves. Its mathematical models are partial differential equations, such as the heat equation, with boundary conditions describing contact with the surroundings. It is basic to engineering design, from engines and buildings to electronics cooling.
