Counterexample

Let GG and HH be finite graphs. Their tensor product G×HG \times H has vertex set V(G)×V(H)V(G) \times V(H). In it, (g,h)(g, h) is adjacent to (g′,h′)(g', h') when gg′gg' is an edge of GG and hh′hh' is an edge of HH. Hedetniemi's conjecture asserted that χ(G×H)=min⁡(χ(G),χ(H))\chi(G \times H) = \min(\chi(G), \chi(H)) for all finite graphs GG and HH, where χ\chi is the chromatic number. The conjecture is false: in 2019 Yaroslav Shitov constructed finite graphs GG and HH with χ(G×H)<min⁡(χ(G),χ(H)).\chi(G \times H) < \min(\chi(G), \chi(H)).

Remarks

The inequality χ(G×H)≤min⁡(χ(G),χ(H))\chi(G \times H) \le \min(\chi(G), \chi(H)) always holds. Indeed, the projection (g,h)↦g(g, h) \mapsto g is a graph homomorphism to GG, so a proper colouring of GG pulls back to one of G×HG \times H. The same holds for HH. Shitov's counterexample uses an exponential graph. For a graph GG and c≥1c \ge 1, the vertices of KcGK_c^G are all maps f ⁣:V(G)→{1,…,c}f \colon V(G) \to \set{1, \dots, c}. Two maps ff and f′f' are adjacent when f(u)≠f′(v)f(u) \ne f'(v) for every edge uvuv of GG, in both orders of uu and vv. The map (v,f)↦f(v)(v, f) \mapsto f(v) is a proper colouring of G×KcGG \times K_c^G with cc colours. Indeed, if (u,f)(u, f) and (v,f′)(v, f') are adjacent, then uvuv is an edge and ff is adjacent to f′f', so f(u)≠f′(v)f(u) \ne f'(v). So any GG with χ(G)>c\chi(G) > c and χ(KcG)>c\chi(K_c^G) > c is a counterexample, and Shitov showed that such GG exist for large cc. The conjecture holds when min⁡(χ(G),χ(H))≤4\min(\chi(G), \chi(H)) \le 4; the case 44 is a theorem of El-Zahar and Sauer.
