Heegaard splitting

Definition
Let be a connected finite graph with Euler characteristic . A handlebody of genus is a -manifold homeomorphic to a closed regular neighbourhood of in . Its boundary is a closed orientable surface of genus .
Let be a closed connected orientable 3-manifold. A Heegaard splitting of is a pair of subsets of such that:
- ;
- and are handlebodies of the same genus ;
- .
The closed surface is the Heegaard surface, and is the genus of the splitting.
Remarks
Every closed connected orientable -manifold has a Heegaard splitting. Take a triangulation and let be a regular neighbourhood of its -skeleton. The closure of the complement is a regular neighbourhood of the dual -skeleton. The Heegaard genus of is the least genus of a Heegaard splitting.
Example: is the union of the solid tori and , which meet in the torus ; this is a splitting of genus . Lens spaces also have splittings of genus .
Non-example: let be a closed tubular neighbourhood of a trefoil knot in and the closure of its complement. Then with a torus, and is a solid torus, but is not a handlebody. Indeed the fundamental group of is , which is not free, while handlebodies have free fundamental groups. So clause 2 fails.
