Definition
Let be the Hamiltonian of a quantum system with Hilbert space , let , and let , a unitary operator for each . In the Heisenberg picture:
- a state vector , or a density operator , does not depend on time;
- an observable at time is , with domain ;
- the expectation value of at time is , or .
Remarks
Since , the expectation values agree with those of the Schrödinger picture. Each is again self-adjoint, with the same spectrum as , and . If is finite-dimensional, solves the Heisenberg equation , with the commutator .
Example: on let , so . A direct computation gives . For one has and , so the expectation value is , as in the Schrödinger picture.
Non-example: the rule , with the factors in the other order, gives , the expectation value at time .
