Algebraic topology Homotopy groups Proposition
Higher homotopy groups are abelian
Builds on Homotopy groupAbelian group
Statement
Let be a pointed space, and let . Then the homotopy group is an abelian group.
Remarks
Represent two elements by maps that send to . Up to homotopy, can be shrunk to a small cube and to another small cube, with the map equal to elsewhere. Because , there is room in a second coordinate direction to slide the two cubes around each other, which turns into . Algebraically, the sums along the first and the second coordinate are two operations with a common unit that commute with each other. The Eckmann–Hilton argument shows that they agree and are commutative. The hypothesis is necessary: the fundamental group of the wedge of two circles is the free group on two generators, which is not abelian.

For a student
The result explains why for behaves much like homology, and why the Hurewicz theorem can compare them directly. The fundamental group still acts on , so is a module over the group ring . The same sliding argument shows that of a topological group, or of any H-space, is abelian.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
