Statement

Let XX be a path-connected space with base point x0x_0, and let n≥1n \ge 1. Fix a generator unu_n of Hn(Sn;ℤ)≅ℤH_n(S^n; \Z) \cong \Z. The Hurewicz map h ⁣:πn(X,x0)→Hn(X;ℤ)h \colon \pi_n(X, x_0) \to H_n(X; \Z) sends the class of f ⁣:Sn→Xf \colon S^n \to X to f∗(un)f_*(u_n). Here πn\pi_n is the homotopy group and HnH_n is singular homology.

  1. For n=1n = 1, hh is surjective and its kernel is the commutator subgroup of the fundamental group. Hence H1(X;ℤ)H_1(X; \Z) is the abelianisation of π1(X,x0)\pi_1(X, x_0).
  2. For n≥2n \ge 2, assume that XX is (n−1)(n-1)-connected. Then the reduced homology H~k(X;ℤ)\tilde H_k(X; \Z) vanishes for k<nk < n, and h ⁣:πn(X,x0)→Hn(X;ℤ)h \colon \pi_n(X, x_0) \to H_n(X; \Z) is an isomorphism.

Remarks

The map hh is a homomorphism, because a sum of maps Sn→XS^n \to X factors through the pinch map Sn→Sn∨SnS^n \to S^n \vee S^n. For n≥2n \ge 2, one replaces XX by a weakly equivalent CW complex with a single 00-cell and no cells of dimensions 11 to n−1n - 1. Then both groups are computed from the nn-cells and the attaching maps of the (n+1)(n+1)-cells. Example: SnS^n is (n−1)(n-1)-connected and Hn(Sn)≅ℤH_n(S^n) \cong \Z, so πn(Sn)≅ℤ\pi_n(S^n) \cong \Z, generated by the identity. The isomorphism stops at the first nonzero degree: S2S^2 is 11-connected, yet π3(S2)≅ℤ\pi_3(S^2) \cong \Z while H3(S2)=0H_3(S^2) = 0.

For a student

The theorem gives the first nonzero homotopy group of a simply connected space from its homology. With the Whitehead theorem, it shows that a homology isomorphism between simply connected CW complexes is a homotopy equivalence. A relative version for pairs of spaces extends it further. It is also the starting point for Serre's mod 𝒞\mathcal{C} theory, which compares homotopy and homology modulo classes of abelian groups.
