Definition

Let XX and YY be complex Banach spaces, let U⊆XU \subseteq X be open and let f ⁣:U→Yf \colon U \to Y. The map ff is holomorphic on UU if, for each a∈Ua \in U, there is a continuous complex-linear map L ⁣:X→YL \colon X \to Y with lim⁡h→0∥f(a+h)−f(a)−Lh∥∥h∥=0.\lim_{h \to 0} \frac{\norm{f(a + h) - f(a) - L h}}{\norm{h}} = 0. That is, ff has a complex Fréchet derivative Df(a)=LDf(a) = L at each point aa of UU.

Remarks

The following conditions on f ⁣:U→Yf \colon U \to Y are equivalent:

  1. ff is holomorphic.
  2. ff is analytic on UU over ℂ\C.
  3. ff is continuous, and for all a∈Ua \in U and h∈Xh \in X, the map z↦f(a+zh)z \mapsto f(a + z h) is a holomorphic function on the open set of z∈ℂz \in \C with a+zh∈Ua + z h \in U.

A map with the property on complex lines in 3, without continuity, is called Gateaux holomorphic, after the Gateaux derivative.

Example: let BB be a complex Banach algebra and f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2. Then f(a+h)−f(a)=ah+ha+h2f(a + h) - f(a) = a h + h a + h^2, and ∥h2∥≤∥h∥2\norm{h^2} \le \norm{h}^2, so Df(a)h=ah+haDf(a) h = a h + h a, which is complex-linear.

Non-example: on ℂ\C, the map f(z)=z‾f(z) = \overline{z} has the real derivative h↦h‾h \mapsto \overline{h}, which is not complex-linear. So ff is not holomorphic, although it is real Fréchet differentiable.

A discontinuous linear form on an infinite-dimensional complex Banach space is holomorphic on every complex line but is not holomorphic, since it is not continuous. This shows that continuity in clause 3 cannot be dropped.
