definition

Homogeneous system of linear equations

Definition

Let FF be a field. A system of linear equations over FF is homogeneous when each of its constant terms is 00. In matrix form, a homogeneous system is an equation Ax=0Ax = 0, where AA is an m×nm \times n matrix over FF and x=(x1,…,xn)Tx = (x_1, \dots, x_n)^T.

Remarks

The tuple (0,…,0)(0, \dots, 0) is always a solution, the trivial solution. The solution set of Ax=0Ax = 0 is a linear subspace of FnF^n, the null space of AA. If a system Ax=bAx = b has a solution pp, then its solution set is {p+v:Av=0}\{p + v : Av = 0\}. A homogeneous system with more unknowns than equations has a nontrivial solution.

Explanations

L1 human

A homogeneous system has zero on the right side of every equation. Setting every unknown to zero always works, so the question is whether other solutions exist. The sum of two solutions is again a solution, and so is any multiple of a solution.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
