Homology with coefficients

Definition
Let be a topological space and let be an abelian group. The group of singular -chains with coefficients in is the set of finite formal sums . Here and are singular -simplices; equivalently, . The boundary map is , where the hat means that the vertex is omitted. This gives a chain complex, and the homology of with coefficients in , written , is its homology in degree . For a subspace , the relative groups come from in the same way.
Remarks
For this is ordinary singular homology. If is a commutative ring, then is an -module; for a field it is a vector space. The universal coefficient theorem gives a split exact sequence , with Tor the Tor functor.
Example: for the real projective plane, and . The universal coefficient theorem gives .
Non-example: the construction needs to be abelian, since the boundary formula adds coefficients in an arbitrary order. The proof that rearranges the double sum and cancels terms in pairs, which uses that addition in is commutative.
