Real projective space

Description

Let n≥1n \ge 1 be an integer. The real projective space ℝℙn\mathbb{RP}^n is the set of lines through the origin in ℝn+1\R^{n+1}. As a topological space it is the quotient of the nn-sphere SnS^n by the relation that identifies each point xx with its antipode −x-x. It is a compact topological manifold of dimension nn. For i=1,…,n+1i = 1, \ldots, n+1, let UiU_i be the image of {x∈Sn:xi≠0}\set{x \in S^n : x_i \ne 0}. The map Ui→ℝnU_i \to \R^n sending the class of xx to the nn ratios xj/xix_j / x_i with j≠ij \ne i is a homeomorphism, and the n+1n + 1 sets UiU_i cover ℝℙn\mathbb{RP}^n.

Remarks

ℝℙ1\mathbb{RP}^1 is homeomorphic to the circle S1S^1. ℝℙ2\mathbb{RP}^2 is the real projective plane, a closed surface that cannot be embedded in ℝ3\R^3. ℝℙn\mathbb{RP}^n is orientable if and only if nn is odd. For n≥2n \ge 2 the quotient map Sn→ℝℙnS^n \to \mathbb{RP}^n is the universal covering, so the fundamental group of ℝℙn\mathbb{RP}^n has order 22. ℝℙn\mathbb{RP}^n is a CW complex with one cell in each dimension 0,1,…,n0, 1, \ldots, n.
