Statement

Let MM be a compact manifold with boundary of dimension nn with boundary ∂M\partial M, and let RR be a commutative ring with 11. Assume that the interior of MM is RR-oriented, and let [M]∈Hn(M,∂M;R)[M] \in H_n(M, \partial M; R) be the corresponding relative fundamental class. Let HkH^k be singular cohomology, and use relative homology and relative cohomology for the pair (M,∂M)(M, \partial M). Then for every kk, the cap product with [M][M] gives isomorphisms Hk(M;R)→Hn−k(M,∂M;R)andHk(M,∂M;R)→Hn−k(M;R).H^k(M; R) \to H_{n-k}(M, \partial M; R) \qquad\text{and}\qquad H^k(M, \partial M; R) \to H_{n-k}(M; R).

Remarks

The relative fundamental class is the class whose restriction to Hn(M,M∖{x})H_n(M, M \setminus \set{x}) is the local orientation at each interior point xx. The proof uses a collar of the boundary to compare MM with its interior. It then applies the duality theorem behind Poincaré duality to the interior, a noncompact manifold without boundary. When ∂M=∅\partial M = \emptyset, both isomorphisms reduce to Poincaré duality.

Example: for the disc M=DnM = D^n with ∂M=Sn−1\partial M = S^{n-1}, H0(Dn)≅ℤH^0(D^n) \cong \Z and Hn(Dn,Sn−1)≅ℤH_n(D^n, S^{n-1}) \cong \Z. Also Hn(Dn,Sn−1)≅ℤH^n(D^n, S^{n-1}) \cong \Z matches H0(Dn)≅ℤH_0(D^n) \cong \Z, and all other groups vanish on both sides.

For a student

Lefschetz duality is the form of Poincaré duality used for compact manifolds with boundary, such as knot exteriors and cobordisms. Take a compact oriented (2m+1)(2m+1)-manifold MM and a field FF. Lefschetz duality and the long exact sequence of (M,∂M)(M, \partial M) show that the kernel of Hm(∂M;F)→Hm(M;F)H_m(\partial M; F) \to H_m(M; F) has half the dimension of Hm(∂M;F)H_m(\partial M; F). It is the basic tool in the study of manifolds with boundary and of bordism.
