Definition

Let MM be a closed, connected, oriented topological manifold of dimension 44, with fundamental class [M]∈H4(M;ℤ)[M] \in H_4(M; \Z). Let H2H^2 be singular cohomology and ⌣\smile the cup product. Let ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\langle \cdot, \cdot \rangle be the Kronecker pairing of H4(M;ℤ)H^4(M; \Z) with H4(M;ℤ)H_4(M; \Z). The intersection form of MM is the map QM ⁣:H2(M;ℤ)×H2(M;ℤ)→ℤ,QM(a,b)=⟨a⌣b,[M]⟩.Q_M \colon H^2(M; \Z) \times H^2(M; \Z) \to \Z, \qquad Q_M(a, b) = \langle a \smile b, [M] \rangle.

Remarks

QMQ_M is a symmetric bilinear form, since a⌣b=b⌣aa \smile b = b \smile a for classes of even degree. It vanishes if aa or bb is a torsion class, so it induces a form on the free abelian group H2(M;ℤ)/torsionH^2(M; \Z)/\text{torsion}. By Poincaré duality this induced form is unimodular: its matrix in any basis is a unimodular matrix, with determinant ±1\pm 1. Its rank is b2(M)b_2(M), and the signature of its real extension is the signature of MM.

Example: for the complex projective plane ℂP2\C P^2 with its complex orientation, H2≅ℤH^2 \cong \Z is generated by xx with ⟨x2,[ℂP2]⟩=1\langle x^2, [\C P^2] \rangle = 1, so Q=(1)Q = (1). For S2×S2S^2 \times S^2 the form has matrix (0110)\begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix} in the basis given by the two factors.

Non-example: on a closed oriented surface Σ\Sigma, the analogous form H1(Σ)×H1(Σ)→ℤH^1(\Sigma) \times H^1(\Sigma) \to \Z is skew-symmetric, not symmetric. The reason is that a⌣b=− b⌣aa \smile b = -\,b \smile a in degree 11. A symmetric form needs dimension 44, or more generally 4k4k with middle degree 2k2k.
