Definition
Let be a closed topological manifold of dimension , that is, a compact manifold without boundary, and let be an orientation of . A fundamental class of is a class in singular homology with the following property. For every , the map induced by inclusion sends to .
Remarks
For a closed oriented -manifold a fundamental class exists and is unique. If is also connected, then , generated by . With coefficients every closed manifold, orientable or not, has a unique fundamental class in . The groups are relative homology groups.
Example: for with its counterclockwise orientation, the loop , , is a singular -cycle. Its class generates and restricts to the counterclockwise local generator at each point, so .
Non-example: the compactness hypothesis is needed, since and so has no fundamental class. The orientation hypothesis is needed with coefficients, since for the real projective plane.
