Definition

Let k≥2k \ge 2 and n≥2n \ge 2 be integers. Let Pn(k)=Sn−1∪kenP^n(k) = S^{n-1} \cup_k e^n be the space obtained by attaching an nn-cell to Sn−1S^{n-1} along a map of degree kk; it is a Moore space M(ℤ/k,n−1)M(\Z/k, n - 1). Let XX be a pointed space. The nn-th homotopy group of XX with coefficients in ℤ/k\Z/k is the set of pointed homotopy classes of pointed maps πn(X;ℤ/k)=[Pn(k),X]∗.\pi_n(X; \Z/k) = [P^n(k), X]_*.

Remarks

For n≥3n \ge 3 the space Pn(k)P^n(k) is the suspension of Pn−1(k)P^{n-1}(k), so πn(X;ℤ/k)\pi_n(X; \Z/k) is a group. For n≥4n \ge 4 it is a double suspension, so the group is abelian. For n=2n = 2 the set π2(X;ℤ/k)\pi_2(X; \Z/k) is in general only a pointed set.

For n≥3n \ge 3 the cofibre sequence Sn−1→kSn−1→Pn(k)S^{n-1} \xrightarrow{k} S^{n-1} \to P^n(k) gives a short exact sequence 0→πn(X)⊗ℤ/k→πn(X;ℤ/k)→{x∈πn−1(X):kx=0}→0,0 \to \pi_n(X) \otimes \Z/k \to \pi_n(X; \Z/k) \to \set{x \in \pi_{n-1}(X) : kx = 0} \to 0, where πn(X)\pi_n(X) is the ordinary homotopy group.

Example: for X=SnX = S^n with n≥3n \ge 3, πn(Sn)⊗ℤ/k≅ℤ/k\pi_n(S^n) \otimes \Z/k \cong \Z/k and πn−1(Sn)=0\pi_{n-1}(S^n) = 0, so πn(Sn;ℤ/k)≅ℤ/k\pi_n(S^n; \Z/k) \cong \Z/k.

Non-example: maps from SnS^n to XX do not give πn(X;ℤ/k)\pi_n(X; \Z/k), since SnS^n is not a Moore space M(ℤ/k,n−1)M(\Z/k, n-1); its homology in degree n−1n - 1 is 00 for n≥2n \ge 2, not ℤ/k\Z/k.
