Definition
Let be a ring with identity, and let be the simplicial ring with , as in Karoubi–Villamayor K-theory. Let denote the nonconnective K-theory spectrum of Bass and Thomason. Its homotopy groups are the K-groups in degrees and the negative K-groups in degrees . The homotopy K-theory spectrum of is the geometric realization (homotopy colimit over ) of the simplicial spectrum : Its homotopy groups , , are the homotopy K-groups of .
Remarks
The inclusion gives a natural map . The functor is homotopy invariant: for all .
Example: let be a regular Noetherian ring. Then each is regular, by homotopy invariance, and the negative K-groups vanish. So the simplicial spectrum is constant up to equivalence, and for while for .
Non-example: ordinary K-theory is not homotopy invariant, so the map is not always an equivalence. For over a field , the class of the unit shows that , while .
