Definition
Let be a field. A Hopf algebra over is a bialgebra over together with a linear map such that The map is the antipode of .
Remarks
Example: the group algebra of a group , with , and . The check on a basis element : , and likewise . Example: the universal enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra , with , and for . Non-example: the monoid algebra of , with and , is a bialgebra but not a Hopf algebra. An antipode would need , but has no inverse in . The antipode of a Hopf algebra is unique, because it is the inverse of in the convolution algebra .
