Statement

Let GG be a group, let FF be a free group, and let RR be a normal subgroup of FF with G≅F/RG \cong F/R. Write [A,B][A, B] for the subgroup generated by the commutators aba−1b−1aba^{-1}b^{-1} with a∈Aa \in A and b∈Bb \in B. Then the second integral homology group of GG is H2(G,ℤ)≅R∩[F,F][F,R].H_2(G, \Z) \cong \frac{R \cap [F, F]}{[F, R]}.

Remarks

Idea of the proof: the short exact sequence 1→R→F→G→11 \to R \to F \to G \to 1 gives the exact sequence of low-degree terms H2(F,ℤ)→H2(G,ℤ)→R/[F,R]→F/[F,F]→G/[G,G]→0.H_2(F, \Z) \to H_2(G, \Z) \to R / [F, R] \to F / [F, F] \to G / [G, G] \to 0. Since FF is free, H2(F,ℤ)=0H_2(F, \Z) = 0, so H2(G,ℤ)H_2(G, \Z) is the kernel of R/[F,R]→F/[F,F]R / [F, R] \to F / [F, F], which is (R∩[F,F])/[F,R](R \cap [F, F]) / [F, R].

In particular, the right side does not depend on the chosen presentation of GG.

Example: G=ℤ2=⟨a,b∣aba−1b−1⟩G = \Z^2 = \langle a, b \mid aba^{-1}b^{-1} \rangle, with FF free on a,ba, b. Here R=[F,F]R = [F, F], because the normal closure of aba−1b−1aba^{-1}b^{-1} in FF is the commutator subgroup [F,F][F, F]. So H2(ℤ2,ℤ)≅[F,F]/[F,[F,F]]H_2(\Z^2, \Z) \cong [F, F] / [F, [F, F]], which is infinite cyclic, generated by the image of aba−1b−1aba^{-1}b^{-1}. This matches the homology of the torus.

Example: G=ℤ/mℤG = \Z / m\Z, with F=ℤF = \Z and R=mℤR = m\Z. Then [F,F][F, F] is trivial, so H2(ℤ/mℤ,ℤ)=0H_2(\Z/m\Z, \Z) = 0.

For a student

For a finite group GG, the group H2(G,ℤ)H_2(G, \Z) is the Schur multiplier, which controls the central extensions of GG and its projective representations. Hopf's formula gives a purely algebraic way to compute it. The exact sequence in the proof is the five-term sequence of the Lyndon–Hochschild–Serre spectral sequence.
