Definition
Let be an open set and let be smooth vector fields on . Let be the Lie bracket of vector fields, and let the indices range over . The family satisfies Hörmander's condition if, at every point , the vectors span . Equivalently, the Lie algebra generated by spans the tangent space at every point.
Remarks
Hörmander's theorem: under this condition, for every smooth function , the operator is hypoelliptic, where each vector field acts as a first-order differential operator. Example: on , let and . Then , so and span at every point, and the Kolmogorov operator is hypoelliptic. Non-example: on , the single field fails the condition, since all its brackets vanish and alone spans a line. Accordingly, is not hypoelliptic: satisfies but is not smooth. In stochastic analysis one often uses a stronger parabolic version, in which itself is left out of the first level of the spanning family.
