Horndeski's theory
Summary
Horndeski's theory is the most general scalar–tensor theory in four dimensions with second-order field equations. Its Lagrangian is built from the metric, a scalar field and their derivatives. Gregory Horndeski found it in 1974. It contains Brans–Dicke theory, gravity and many models of dark energy as special cases. This makes it a common framework for testing gravity with cosmology.
