Relativity and gravitational theory Alternative theories of gravity Concept
Scalar–tensor theory
Summary
A scalar–tensor theory is a theory of gravity in which a scalar field acts on gravity together with the spacetime metric. The scalar field typically sets the effective strength of the gravitational coupling, which may then vary in space and time. Scalar–tensor theories are the most studied alternatives to general relativity. They appear in models of inflation and dark energy and in low-energy limits of string theory.
