Definition
Let be a Lorentzian metric on a four-dimensional manifold and a real scalar field. Write for the covariant derivative of , , , for the scalar curvature and for the Einstein tensor. Let be smooth functions of , and write . Horndeski's theory is the scalar–tensor theory with action , where

and the matter action depends on and the matter fields but not on .
Remarks
This is the form of the Lagrangian found by Kobayashi, Yamaguchi and Yokoyama, which is equivalent to Horndeski's original one. Although the Lagrangian contains second derivatives of and of , the combinations above are chosen so that the field equations contain no derivatives higher than the second. Example: , and give general relativity with a minimally coupled scalar field with potential . Example: , and give Brans–Dicke theory. Non-example: the Lagrangian alone gives a fourth-order equation for , so it is not in the class. The observed equality of the speeds of gravitational waves and light constrains the theory strongly, essentially forcing and to be nearly constant.
