Statement

Let GG be a locally compact group with a left Haar measure, and let λ\lambda be its left regular representation on L2(G)L^2(G). For f∈L1(G)f \in L^1(G), let λ(f)\lambda(f) be the bounded operator ξ↦f∗ξ\xi \mapsto f * \xi on L2(G)L^2(G). The following are equivalent.

  1. GG is amenable.
  2. λ\lambda has almost invariant vectors: for every compact K⊆GK \subseteq G and ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is a unit vector ξ∈L2(G)\xi \in L^2(G) with ∥λ(x)ξ−ξ∥2<ε\norm{\lambda(x)\xi - \xi}_2 < \varepsilon for all x∈Kx \in K.
  3. ∥λ(f)∥=∫Gf dm\norm{\lambda(f)} = \int_G f \, dm for every f∈L1(G)f \in L^1(G) with f≥0f \ge 0, where mm is the Haar measure.

Remarks

Condition 2 says that the trivial representation is weakly contained in λ\lambda. From Reiter's condition one passes to condition 2 by taking ξ=f1/2\xi = f^{1/2}, using ∥a1/2−b1/2∥22≤∥a−b∥1\norm{a^{1/2} - b^{1/2}}_2^2 \le \norm{a - b}_1 for nonnegative a,ba, b. Condition 2 gives condition 3, because ⟨λ(f)ξ,ξ⟩\ip{\lambda(f)\xi}{\xi} is close to ∫f\int f for almost invariant ξ\xi, while ∥λ(f)∥≤∥f∥1\norm{\lambda(f)} \le \norm{f}_1 always.

Example: for G=ℤG = \Z, take ξ=n−1/2𝟏{0,…,n−1}\xi = n^{-1/2} \mathbf{1}_{\set{0, \ldots, n-1}}; then ∥λ(k)ξ−ξ∥22=2∣k∣/n\norm{\lambda(k)\xi - \xi}_2^2 = 2\abs{k}/n for ∣k∣≤n\abs{k} \le n. For the free group F2F_2 with generators a,ba, b and f=14(δa+δa−1+δb+δb−1)f = \frac14(\delta_a + \delta_{a^{-1}} + \delta_b + \delta_{b^{-1}}), one has ∥λ(f)∥=3/2<1\norm{\lambda(f)} = \sqrt{3}/2 < 1, so F2F_2 is not amenable.

A consequence is that, for amenable GG, the full and the reduced group C*-algebras coincide.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem puts amenability into the language of unitary representations: the trivial representation lies in the reduced dual, which is the support of λ\lambda for the Fell topology. For a discrete group, condition 3 applied to a symmetric probability measure gives Kesten's criterion. Non-amenability is a weak relative of Kazhdan's property (T). A non-amenable group has no almost invariant vectors in L2(G)L^2(G). Property (T) forbids them in every representation without invariant vectors.
