Kesten's criterion for amenability

Builds on GroupProbability measureRandom walkAmenable groupSpectral radius

Statement

Let GG be a countable group with identity ee. Let μ\mu be a probability measure on GG that is symmetric, μ(g)=μ(g−1)\mu(g) = \mu(g^{-1}) for all gg, and whose support generates GG as a group. Let μ∗n\mu^{*n} be the nn-fold convolution power of μ\mu. So μ∗n(e)\mu^{*n}(e) is the probability that the random walk with steps distributed by μ\mu is back at ee after nn steps. Then GG is amenable if and only if lim sup⁡n→∞μ∗n(e)1/n=1.\limsup_{n \to \infty} \mu^{*n}(e)^{1/n} = 1.

Remarks

The left side is the spectral radius of the random walk. It equals the norm of the self-adjoint convolution operator λ(μ) ⁣:ξ↦μ∗ξ\lambda(\mu) \colon \xi \mapsto \mu * \xi on ℓ2(G)\ell^2(G), because μ∗2n(e)=⟨λ(μ)2nδe,δe⟩\mu^{*2n}(e) = \ip{\lambda(\mu)^{2n} \delta_e}{\delta_e}. So the criterion is the case of Hulanicki's theorem for this measure: GG is amenable exactly when ∥λ(μ)∥=1\norm{\lambda(\mu)} = 1.

Example: for G=ℤG = \Z and μ=12(δ1+δ−1)\mu = \frac12(\delta_1 + \delta_{-1}), one has μ∗2n(0)=(2nn)4−n\mu^{*2n}(0) = \binom{2n}{n} 4^{-n}, which is about 1/πn1/\sqrt{\pi n}, and its 2n2n-th root tends to 11. For the free group FkF_k with k≥2k \ge 2 free generators, and μ\mu uniform on the generators and their inverses, Kesten computed the spectral radius 2k−1/k\sqrt{2k - 1}/k, which is less than 11. So the return probabilities decay exponentially, and FkF_k is not amenable.

For a student

Kesten's criterion links amenability with probability and with the spectrum of the Laplacian of a Cayley graph. Let SS be a finite symmetric generating set and let μ\mu be uniform on SS. Then λ(μ)\lambda(\mu) is the Markov operator of the Cayley graph, and amenability is equivalent to 11 lying in its spectrum. Grigorchuk's cogrowth criterion restates it in terms of the growth of the set of relations. It was used to show that some groups without free subgroups are not amenable.
