Definition

Let XX be a topological space. The space XX is hyperconnected, or irreducible, if the following two conditions hold.

  1. XX is nonempty.
  2. For all nonempty open sets U,V⊆XU, V \subseteq X, the intersection U∩VU \cap V is nonempty.

Remarks

Equivalent forms: every nonempty open subset of XX is dense in XX. Also equivalent: XX is nonempty and is not the union of two closed subsets different from XX.

Example: an infinite set XX with the cofinite topology. Nonempty open sets have finite complements, so the union of the complements of UU and VV is finite and cannot be all of XX.

Non-example: a Hausdorff space with at least two points fails clause 2. Two distinct points have disjoint open neighbourhoods.
