Definition
Let be an algebraically closed field, and let be the projective line over . A smooth projective algebraic curve over is hyperelliptic if:
Remarks
If the characteristic of is not , such an is the smooth projective model of an affine curve . Here is squarefree of degree or , and the degree- map is . The degree- map is unique up to automorphisms of , and it defines the hyperelliptic involution . Example: over has squarefree of degree , so it defines a hyperelliptic curve of genus . In fact every curve of genus is hyperelliptic, because its canonical divisor gives a map of degree to . Non-example: a smooth plane quartic has genus but is not hyperelliptic, because its canonical map is the embedding into the plane and so has degree , not . Curves of genus with a point are also double covers of , but they fail clause 1 and are called elliptic curves.
