Hyperfinite type II1 factor
Builds on Von Neumann algebraWeak operator topologyHilbert space
Description
The hyperfinite type factor is the von Neumann algebra obtained as the closure of an increasing union of matrix algebras. Embed into by . These embeddings preserve the normalized trace , so is well defined on the union . Let be the Hilbert space completion of for the inner product , and let act on by left multiplication. Then is the closure of in the weak operator topology on .
Remarks
The algebra is a factor: its center consists of scalars. The trace extends to a faithful normal tracial state on , and the values of on projections fill , so has type . It is hyperfinite: it contains an increasing sequence of finite-dimensional subalgebras whose union is weakly dense. Murray and von Neumann proved that a hyperfinite factor with separable predual is unique up to isomorphism. Connes proved that, among factors with separable predual, is also the unique injective one. Other constructions give the same factor, for example the group von Neumann algebra of the group of finitely supported permutations of . Every type factor contains a von Neumann subalgebra isomorphic to .
