Jones index theorem
Builds on SubfactorHyperfinite type II1 factor
Statement
Let be a subfactor of type factors with Jones index . Then Conversely, every number in this set is the index of a subfactor of the hyperfinite type II1 factor .
Remarks
The proof uses the basic construction: acts on , and adding the orthogonal projection onto gives a larger factor with . Iterating gives a tower with projections that satisfy with and for . The trace restricted to the algebras generated by must be positive, and this forces into the set above. For the values below , the construction of the converse uses these same projections inside .
The first allowed values are , , and , for . So no subfactor has index strictly between and , although the index need not be an integer.

For a student
The relations among the projections are those of the Temperley–Lieb algebra. Jones used representations of the braid group built from them to discover the Jones polynomial of knots. Finer invariants of a subfactor, such as its principal graph and its standard invariant, lead to the classification of subfactors of small index. For the fixed points of an outer action of a finite group on , one has , so the index generalizes the index of a subgroup.
